Araks
Using daring silhouettes and colors, New York-based
Armenian designer, Araks Yeramyan,
unbinds us from the clutches of mundane fashions.
THE RIVER ARAKS
“I am named after the river in Armenia. My father’s name is Ara and my grandmother thought it would be special to have my name similar to his, so she recommended the name Araks.” Fascinated by colors and textures, as a student at Parsons, Araks Yeramyan launched her debut Ready-to-Wear collection in 2010 under her own name. Since then, the Araks label has branched out with lingerie, swim and sleepwear collections. “Effortless, playful and chic,” says Ms. Yeramyan when asked to describe the label. “My father told me to keep it simple and live a minimal life. My mother was about luxury and being and having the best. I am a combination of both.”

Here, Playing Fashion gets to know Araks and the woman behind the name.
MY FATHER TAUGHT ME COLOR
From my first experience with crayons, he gave me three colors - red, yellow and blue - and told me all colors came from these three. Until I was about 10 or 12, I was restricted to this palette. That was the beginning of my obsession with color.
ARMENIAN CULTURE INSPIRES ME
One season I referenced the film The Color of Pomegranates by Sergei Parajanov. It was visually beautiful and the images and colors are still clear in my mind. It is probably one of the most visually memorable films.
THE ARAKS WOMAN IS SUCCESSFUL
She appreciates beautiful design. She is quiet about how she dresses but always looks good. She’s an individual. She trusts her own instincts and follows her own style.
I AM ETERNALLY COMMITTED TO GROWING AS A DESIGNER
The silhouette has evolved but I think the core of the brand: its ease, color and clean lines, will always be there. I love creating beautiful silhouettes and shapes. I’m always challenging myself.
I’VE BEEN OBSESSING OVER ANY NATURAL FIBER MIXED WITH POLYESTER
I love how polyester brings out the intensity of color and it gives the fabric a certain quality that makes it lovely to create shapes with.
I DRESS FOR MY LIFESTYLE, AS A MOTHER AND A DESIGNER
I wear Araks everyday, mixing in high street basics. For someone who loves color, I don’t wear a lot of it. You’ll usually find it on my feet.
MY FAVORITE POSSESSION IS MY APARTMENT
I just renovated and was involved with the creation of every inch. I get to come home, go to bed, and wake up in my world.
