Model-photographer-DJ-it girl-mother. Cate Underwood has been adding to her juggling act ever since she started as a fashion photographer in Ukraine, at 19. Her first cover, in fact, was of Viktoriya Sasonkina for Playing Fashion. Now based in London, Ms. Underwood continues to capture streetstyle bloggers attention with a wardrobe that poses as a soliloquy to the 1990s. When asked about trends and commercial looks she replies, “I would never cheat my passions. What I wear is all about me. It's all about where I am, what I've done, what I'm doing and what I'm going to do.”
A style persona just being one accomplishment on her extensive resume, Playing Fashion met with Ms. Underwoodto talk about her style game, social media, and working on both sides of the lens.
It's very important that everything around me is beautiful. I'm not completely crazy or OCD about it, but it's a way of life for me. Even a good tasting plate of food should look good!
My work as a photographer and my personal style have linked. Style-wise, I’m minimalistic and simplistic. I like it effortless and comfortable. I’m a child of the 90s.
is my Gareth Pugh goat fur coat. It’s basically a black coat with a little fur on the hood and sleeves. I found it in a shop in Odessa, Ukraine. When I saw it, I knew it had to be mine… It was a hot summer in Ukraine but that didn’t stop me!
They find a home with me! (laughs) They’re my guilty pleasure and I have every pair. One pair I bought in Barcelona… It’s a wooden platform with a leopard print. It looks completely ridiculous, but to me they’re so special. Coats and shoes are my accent to outfits.
When I wear earrings, I feel too dressed up. I have these leather bracelets I wear almost every day from my mom. My boyfriend is also a jewelry designer and he made me these beautiful metal rings. The jewelry I do wear is special and adds a personal touch.
I always shoot for myself and my aesthetic reflects in my jobs and my own work. Having experience in all sides (styling, modeling, photography), has allowed me to piece a story or outfit together the way I want it to.
For me, Instagram is more of a photo diary. Even before Instagram, I always carried a tiny digital camera around to take pictures. They’re small, beautiful moments in my life for people to see what I see and that’s why I share them.
