Modern Weave
Tartan – the criss-crossed pattern associated
traditionally with the Scots - is effortlessly weaving cool modern
looks that keeps you warm throughout this winter.
When one thinks of tartan, traditional Scottish wool kilts, Burberry plaids and Vivienne Westwood’s Punk Rock collection immediately spring to mind. However, that is not the only territory tartan triumphed. Namely, the multicolored criss-crossed pattern crisscrosses our lives more often than you think, conquering the hearts of international designers and inspiring them in different ways every season. This season, tartan is taken to a new level, creating easy to wear looks that maintains a bold individuality. Playing with large, fine or simple lines and weavings, tartan is the everyday best friend we effortlessly turn to, whether we needed something preppy formal or punk and rebellious.

“When wearing tartan yourself, don’t go overboard,” advised stylists Shanna Nicole and Elissa Aimee, who styled this editorial in New York City mixing tartan prints with stripes, polka dots, checkers, leather and wool for a sharp bold look. “Pick one or two pieces and build a look around the printed garment. We love mixing tartan with a moto leather jacket, a sleek pencil skirt or a nice tailored pant for a chic on trend Fall ensemble.”
This season, tartan made fearless statements through many international designer collections as diverse as McQ, Karl Lagerfeld, and Preen Line. Italian brand Moschino presented some fun Scottish tartans to spice up the wardrobe. The plaid blazers look particularly smart paired with a plain black turtleneck and sexy velvet tights from Wolford. For a chic modern punk look, just add leather details as seen in Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent collection. Shoes were not forgotten at all, as Charles Philip Shanghai’s tasseled slippers in black and blue tartan grabbed attention and Christian Louboutin designed perfectly-matched signature red-soled shoes in the authoritative pattern for him and her.
Ultimately, remember: tartan is not just a pattern, it weaves an attitude that screams ‘I rock!’ to a look.
