Rachel Bakewell
Stylist and new mom, Rachel Bakewell,
tells Playing Fashion about her personal style, how pregnancy has altered her sartorial choices and how no outfit is complete without a hat.
"I am privileged to work with highly talented celebrities, styling them for magazines and advertising clients,’ says British stylist and new mom Rachel Bakewell, whose statement makes many aspiring stylists envious. Namely, alone for our very own print editions, she has styled covers with Amber le Bon and Poppy Delevingne. The celebrity list extends to include names like David Gandy, Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter and Lupita Nyong’O for magazines like V Man and Vogue. Hats off to such an impressive portfolio! Speaking of hats, the East London-based industry insider’s dream is to have her own magazine or a hat label one day.

Here, Rachel discusses her personal style, how pregnancy has altered her sartorial choices and how no outfit is complete without a hat.

MY FASHION JOURNEY BEGAN after I studied Drama and Costume Design at University and began assisting some great stylists. I was able to work on creative editorials and advertising jobs around the world, as well as fashion weeks in London and Paris. I worked alongside some very creative and inspirational people; I knew this was my dream job from the very first day I assisted! I worked very hard and gave my all to get to where I am today. I am always searching inspiration to make beautiful images and meeting photographers to collaborate with.

TO ME STYLE IS THE WAY you wish to portray yourself, it is a distinctive quality of elegance and flair. The most stylish people in my eyes are understated and have an air of effortlessness. Style icons who are most influential to me are Lou Doillon, Jane Birkin and Marianne Faithfull.

THE BIGGEST THING I’VE LEARNT is work hard and be nice to people. Never give up on what you want. The perception some people have of the fashion industry surprises me. I have met some of the loveliest people working in fashion and many are my best friends to this day.

I AM NOT A VERY SPORTY PERSON, but my work is pretty physical, a lot of running around getting clothes from press offices, carrying samples - I’m always on the go, I think I burn a lot of calories being non-stop in that way! I also have a beautiful Weimarama dog called Snoopy who needs a lot of walks. This definitely helps me keep fit, he pretty much walks me! When I find the time I also love to swim.

I DON’T HAVE A STRICT BEAUTY ROUTINE. I love good moisturisers, especially when I’m so busy I feel it’s a must to keep my skin hydrated. I drink a lot of water and love skincare creams Crème de la Mer and Rodial's Dragon’s Blood. Using Repavar’s amazing Vitamin C Oil makes my skin feel brand new! I also use Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Ren face mask when I need reviving and my newest find is the Clarisonic which exfoliates and tones, allowing your moisturiser to absorb better into the skin. For my hair I love using Kérastase and Kiehl’s Argon Oil for overnight repair. I am lucky that my good friend Jamie McCormick who is an amazing stylist does my colour and cut.

IF I COULD ONLY USE ONE beauty product it would be Crème de la Mer - it makes my skin feel amazing.

DURING PREGNANCY I HAVE USED a lot of body oils, especially around my bump. I used mostly Argon Oil by Kiehl’s. On my face I used Neal’s Yard Frankincense Stem Cell Renewal and Wild Rose Weleda moisturiser. I tried to use natural based products throughout pregnancy and treated myself to a massage and reflexology once a month.

MY WARDROBE DIDN’T REALLY CHANGE that much when I was pregnant, I pretty much live in dresses but I did have to swap ones that cinched in at the waist to looser, smock styles. Vintage dresses worked well for me during pregnancy as I love the ‘60s style. I found Isabel Marant and Zara had great pieces that worked well with my bump.

MY FAVOURITE WARDROBE PIECES are my Maison Michel hat collection; they help me feel better in any outfit. I have a Miu Miu black dress that is great for looking both understated yet dressed up for an evening out, and my Acne star boots were a favourite purchase.

MY FAVOURITE BRANDS are Miu Miu, Chanel, Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant. I love Matches and Net-a-Porter for online shopping. My latest finds are a Saint Laurent wallet and Maison Michel black hat. In London my favourite store is Liberty's and when I’m in Paris I always have to go to Colette. I love Vintage Modes off Bond Street, I could spend hours there going through the rails....
