"The industry is not as scary as I thought,’
divulges modeling newbie Cheyenne Maya Carty, whose resemblance to fellow model Jourdan Dunn is uncanny. Scouted roller-skating (her favorite sport!) in London’s Victoria Park, the 2013 Elite Model Look finalist started modeling last year and has already posed in front of renowned photographers Rankin and Letty Schmiterlow’s cameras. The 18 year old is also a London Fashion Week favorite appearing at shows, such as Holly Fulton, Ryan Lo, Tata Naka and Whistles. In fact, she has opened and led the finale of the Ashish show two seasons in a row.
Here, Playing Fashion talks to Cheyenne about the most extraordinary catwalk shows, the definition of beauty, her idol Jourdan and her most prized possession, her hair.
I GREW UP IN TOTTENHAM
I would call that place home because I spent most of my childhood there. When I was young, I wanted to be a singer or dancer.
PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME KNOW
how obsessed I am with Jourdan Dunn, she's like my long lost big sister, I hope I get to meet her one day. I love her!
A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME STARTS
with jumping out of my bed and turning up the radio full blast to wake me up, shower, get ready and eat a bowl of crunchy nut. Everywhere I go, I bring my phone, headphones, oyster, money and lip balm.
TO GET READY FOR A SHOOT
I listen to music to get the good vibes going. While I wait for a show, I dance, sing, socialize, have a laugh and take selfies with the other models.
MY MOST REMARKABLE AND MEMORABLE SHOW
definitely goes out to Ashish. Opening and leading the finale two seasons in a row has been an honor. Love him! The most dramatic show I have done has to be the Kansai Yamamoto show at V&A museum. I can't say I walked for his show because all the models has to express their personalities down the runway. I danced and cartwheeled down the catwalk moving every part of my body. It was awesome and so unique! Kansai is an amazing man!
THE STEREOTYPICAL DEFINITION OF “BEAUTY”
in my opinion is super skinny, super tall and amazing figure. Tall is the look for models, unrealistically beautiful and stick thin, but tall and thin isn't the build of most of the worlds women. It's actually a surprisingly small amount. So, why do they do it?
even if you are a model. You may not be right for a certain designer but perfect for another. So I just let it go through one ear and straight out the other and have faith someone will acknowledge me. My mother taught me to be street wise and be proud of myself always. She's the best!
TO STAY IN SHAPE
I skate and walk a lot of the time. My favorite sport is rollerskating. I've never actually been to a spa but I do like going out for a meal or movies with friends and family.
I use Nivea soft to moisturize and I love my MAC studio fix foundation. When I have 5 mins to do my makeup, I slap on some concealer and little bit of mascara.
I DON’T REALLY HAVE ONE STYLE
to be honest. I shop in Zara, H&M and River Island. Some days I can be really girly but most of the time, I change it up and dress really street/urban, skater, vintage and ‘90s. I'm a total sneaker freak!!
MY HAIR IS MY BEST FRIEND.
No one comes between me and my hair. I will never cut my hair or perm it.
HAPPINESS IS TO LIVE LIFE
to the fullest, pursue my dreams and aspirations.
