Issue 69
Lauren English
This week’s model profile star is Lauren English,
who faces the huge, ever-changing fashion industry with an open mind and hard working attitude to carve a successful career.
THE CANADIAN CONQUEST
“I always had this weird fascination with space,” Lauren English remembers her childhood dream. “To be an astronomer and be able to look at planets up close through a telescope sounded pretty cool at the time.“ The sky is still the limit for the 21 year old, as her first official season was welcomed warmly by fashion’s favourite American designer, Alexander Wang, who casted her to walk exclusively for him during New York Fashion Week. “The most memorable show I have done so far is walking for Alexander Wang,” recalls the Canadian model her unusual experience. “It was my first major international show!” Since then, her killer bone structure and lithe 5’11 frame can be seen fronting the ad campaign of Strenesse as well as walking shows for major brands in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Balenciaga, Céline, Daks, Elie Saab, and Missoni are in fact amongst her impressive show list.

Here, Miss English talks to Playing Fashion about how she is cutting the mustard in the world of modelling (despite not liking mustard at all) following the guidance of a special role model and her own simple beauty and style tips.

I GREW UP IN BRAMPTON, ONTARIO
which is where I still live. Although I'm not home much, it will always be home for me. It's where I grew up, where I have all of memories with family and friends.
MY MOM HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY MAIN ROLE MODEL
Constantly inspiring me to do better and to never get down on myself. She's always been the most supportive of what I do, and gives the best advice whether it’s what I want to hear or not. She has taught me to be kind and respectful to everyone, it's a small world. That things aren't always what they appear to be; something that may seem negative at the time may end up being a good thing. Also, to be positive and confident, and that everything happens for a reason.
I START MY DAY WITH A BIG BREAKFAST
It is my favourite meal of the day. I usually have organic oats with a banana and hemp seeds, or a veggie omelette. I won’t leave the house without my phone, headphones, hair tie, lip chap and gum. While I wait for castings and fittings, I read a good book or play spider solitaire on my iPad.
HAVE AN OPEN MIND, EXPECT ANYTHING
The business is a huge, ever-changing industry. It's more hard work than people make it out to be, or think it is. I am always down for a challenge. I don't feel like you are playing a character necessarily. It's just something that comes naturally if you leave all expectations and nerves at the door.
DON’T TAKE EVERYTHING PERSONALLY!
don't always consider criticism to be a bad thing because there's always something you can work on to better yourself and your career.
COMING FROM AN INDUSTRY FILLED WITH BEAUTIFUL WOMEN
it doesn't matter how "pretty" people think you are if it comes with an ugly personality. How you present yourself, how you treat people, the way and tone you speak, the respect you give, and the more genuine you are, define one's beauty in my opinion.
I WASH MY FACE EVERY MORNING
with Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, followed with Shiseido IBUKI moisturizer or raw organic coconut oil if my skin is really dehydrated. I don't wear makeup often but when I do I use Diorshow mascara, Maybelline powder, Nars Malibu 3 in 1 stick, and Eau Thermal Avene cold cream lip balm.
MY PERSONAL STYLE
and what I choose to wear on a daily basis really depends on my mood. I have my fair share of comfy days with leggings and oversized sweaters, but usually I like to be a little dressy. I love leather and anything black. Some of my favourite pieces are from BCBG, Cop. Copine, Mango, and Alexander Wang.
HAPPINESS IS A WARM CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE
and to be healthy, successful, and all that other stuff. I don't treat myself as much as I should but there's nothing better than getting a massage!
