Linda Rodin
Playing Fashion goes pink and gets down with
one of New York’s coolest ladies - beauty tastemaker, creator of Olio Lusso, fashion stylist and star of this season’s The Row campaign: Linda Rodin.
ALWAYS COOL
“Fashion can be too serious,” says 65-year-old fashion stylist, beauty entrepreneur and model, Linda Rodin. “It’s just clothing – though I do love it.” She is the genius behind beauty line Rodin Olio Lusso and its now renowned face oil. “I played around and mixed the oils like you would with salad dressing.” First creating the product in her bathroom, Ms. Rodin began bringing the oil to shoots and that’s when models and make-up artists alike began falling in love. Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima says, “I use Linda Rodin oil. I know Linda personally. She’s about 60 years old and the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life!” Olio Lusso has grown since then and has branched out with a fragrance, lip balm, body oil, candle and has a facial cleanser coming in November and a hair conditioner due mid 2015. Ms. Rodin only makes products she uses, but has created a fashion cult following.

As a freelance stylist for over 30 years, Ms. Rodin works with some of the biggest clients in the fashion industry. “It needs to be fun and feels like a collage,” she explains. “Just throwing everything together and seeing what turns out.” Work aside, her personal style has also been blazing all over the blogosphere, usually photographed walking her beloved poodle Winky in the streets of New York City.

Ms. Rodin met with Playing Fashion at the Norwood Club in Chelsea a few days after the shoot which she styled herself. She was wearing a black Comme des Garçons top and slim white Acne jeans, all while sipping a glass of wine with her signature Miu Miu glasses still on.

Here, Ms. Rodin gets more personal, talking about her styling game, Olio Lusso, and of course… Winky.
I STARTED AS AN ASSISTANT TO A PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE ‘70S
Then I began working at Bendel’s – when it was still cool – in the early ‘80s. I began working for Harper’s Bazaar in the ‘80s. One job I did for them was with Madonna in 1984 before she was even that famous, so it’s interesting to look back and see how she has changed the world since then.
BEING A STYLIST IS LIKE BEING A PAINTER
You have a blank canvas and you mix and throw everything on top: clothes, accessories, nail polish. I don’t like clothes that drape and are too big. I prefer smaller, tailored pieces. I do gravitate towards Marni, Miu Miu, Prada, MM6, but it doesn’t have to be a big label. Just has to look good on me!
MY PERSONAL STYLE HAS NEVER OVERLAPPED WITH MY WORK
When you do advertising, it is difficult to imprint your style because they know what they want. So unless you’re a creative consultant, you can’t push for your own style. I always styled myself for myself and saved the rest for my clients. I’d rather see my style on me!
I LOVED WORKING WITH THE ROW
Their clothes are elegant, beautiful and hip at the same time. They really are ahead of the curve with their design and went out on a limb to work with an older woman. Both girls (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) were very lovely and respectful. I didn't have make-up on and nothing was retouched, so I saw what I see when looking in the mirror!
AM A DENIM FANATIC
Recently I found an old photo of me and my sister and noticed I've been wearing jeans since I was four years old. I just bought a pair of Valentino jeans that are like Sonny and Cher. They’re so crazy! I also have a few Derek Lam pieces and Acne does great jeans. Whoever makes good denim, I’ll buy.
MY MOTHER WAS VERY GLAMOROUS
She was beautiful and wore clothes very well. She could charm anyone and make a party out of nothing. My latest fragrance, Rodin Bis, is an ode to my mom and is reminiscent to what she smelled like in the ‘50s.
FRESH SALADS WITH FRESH INGREDIENTS: SIMPLE AND TASTY
Mediterranean diet is something I have been doing for a while. Lots of salads with olive oil and always avocado and tomatoes, with an occasional glass of wine. I love making pasta too. It’s a diet that I love and one that I have been following for decades.
I SEE BEAUTY IN ANYTHING
Beauty comes at any age, any size, young and old. I find a 99-year-old woman just as beautiful as an 18-year-old girl, just differently. We didn’t have beauty products when I was growing up. In fact, all we had was soap and water. There weren’t 12 shades of lipsticks and different kinds of shampoos. I love real beauty and try to be as natural as I can, with the exception of either my hot pink or hot orange lipstick. I have never dyed my hair and even at this point in my life, I could never get a face-lift.
OLIO LUSSO IS FOR EVERYBODY
It doesn’t make any false claims and promises. It feels luxurious, smells delicious, it makes your skin very dewy and supple; but I have heard from a lot of people – young and old – that it has cured their acne and rosacea. My intent with it was just to make something for me.
WINKY IS MY CHILD, MY BEST FRIEND, MY EVERYTHING
He has been with me since he was three months old and is now four and a half years old. I learn something from him everyday and love him for it. When I leave him alone for a while and come back, he gets angry with me! I love this creature.
I DON’T REALLY WANT MORE THAN I HAVE…
I am very grateful for what I have and how I earned it – through my hard work. I just want to be healthy and enjoy my friends and my dog. When I look back, I never had a big plan, but rather lived my life day by day. I still do.
