Issue 93
Josefin Gustafsson
Meet this week’s model profile star, Josefin Gustafsson,
who is the winner of Sweden’s Next Top Model and maker of the best spaghetti bolognese.
A REAL STAR
From a village called “Täfteå" in the North of Sweden to competing in Sweden’s Next Top Model and subsequently winning the reality TV show and signing with the country’s top modeling agency Stockholmsgruppen, the word “shine” perfectly describes 6 foot tall Josefin Gustafsson’s rising modeling career. Her first show abroad was to walk exclusively for Alexander Wang in New York. Since then, the Swede raids the runways in the 4 fashion capitals with her doll-like appearance and sharp professionalism. Bottega Veneta, Emporio Armani, and Marc Jacobs are just a few of the shows she walked last season. Yet, it’s not only about looking her best which counts for this hazel-eyed brunette, “I just started a distance learning course in economy and marketing, so right now that’s my time-killer.”

Here, Ms. Gustafsson shares with Playing Fashion how stubbornness lends a hand to her success, how she gets prepared for a shoot, and what she does to look her best in front of the lens of the like of photographer Kai Z Feng.
I HAVE THE BEST MUM EVER
She ALWAYS knows best (at least that's what she thinks) but we are both really stubborn so I'm not gonna admit that she's right about anything. (laughs) First of all, she's taught me to do the BEST spaghetti bolognese ever, but to be more serious my mum has taught me to believe in myself and not give up so easily. I probably would have stopped working as a model a long time ago if it wasn't for my stubborn mother. She's also taught me to not be too afraid to try new things, especially when it comes to traveling.
THE ONE THING I FIND A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE
is to play super happy, jump and look like you are having the best time ever when the whole crew is staring at you with stoned faces, looking not so happy at all.
I GET INSPIRED BY PEOPLE I MEET
Through my job I meet so many interesting people. I meet girls from the other side of the world who gives me a new perspective on things. I see people on the streets of London who have the coolest style ever. I get to share a room with a girl who has been working for 6 years as a model and never stopped because she wanted it so bad and now she's walking the runways for the biggest brands. I get to see a part of the process before the big shows. That's what inspires me.
BEFORE A SHOOT
I always google the team I’m to work with, or at least the photographer, so I know what he or she likes. It's always good to be prepared. Then, a good night’s sleep, a long breakfast and I'm ready!
HAVING SEEN IT "FROM THE OTHER SIDE”
I’m starting to feel like I can spend a bit more on clothing. Before I would never consider buying a top for over €100, but when you've seen how much work designers put in their collections, you start to think different.
I ALWAYS CLEAN MY FACE WITH MY NEW LOVE
Clarisonic, which is like a brush that vibrates and takes away all the make up on your skin. It's amazing especially after a day in the studio when you feel like you have a mask of foundation on your face. Then, I use a vitamin C serum from transderma, Kenzoki’s Crème qui fait Belle, an eye cream from Oriflame and always Elizabeth Ardens eight hour cream on the lips! I always have it with me. Once a week, I do a face mask from Maria Åkerberg.
I TRY TO HAVE A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
eat healthy fresh food and work out a couple of times each week and all that boring stuff that everyone tells you but that's a good start. I love trying different kind of sports. Right now I do bikram yoga, spinning, jumping rope, and long walks while listening to a really good podcast.
