The Cut
Fashion is obsessed with artist Henri Matisse’s striking cut-outs.
he Finest Cut. Artist Henri Matisse’s striking style and techniques have not only radicalized modern art, but also continue to impact fashion in a simply stylish way. With this playful accessories-based story, photographer Marc Hibbert and stylist Sophie Gaten pay homage to the French master’s infamous final series of work - the cut-outs.

“The idea is that the shoot is seen as a Diptych. We chose to represent shape and color, juxtaposing block colors with print and texture, drawing attention to positive and negative space,” explains Ms. Gaten. To complete this understatedly minimalist look inspired by Matisse’s lively composition, Heohwah Simulation’s checked jacket and trousers are paired with a punk pair of studded Claudie Pierlot loafers; while Issa London’s color blocked total look is balanced off with a simple bag by W-ou. Add a stroke of genius to these looks with sharp pieces, such as Esin Akan’s daisy printed city clutch, Dora Teymur’s orange and white two tone chunky shoes, and Markus Lupfer’s heart-framed glitter sunnies. “I wanted the clothes to bounce off the set, and reflect the fun youthful nature of the shoot.”
